Human life begins at conception.
All of Science and the Bible Affirm this
Abortion is fundamentally a sin, and defending it is a suppression of the truth.
It's no surprise that when you stand up for unborn babies, you are bringing the "Gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ into conflict with the culture that celebrates it".
The issue is spiritual, and those that support often have a "moral" problem rather than just an intellectual one, meaning only the Holy Spirit can truly open their eyes. Knowing this can help you not take their anger personally; your role is simply to speak the truth, knowing that the reaction is between them and God. You are entirely right to point out that there needs to be more hope and support. The Christian duty does not end at telling people abortion is wrong, we must show that Jesus can offer them forgiveness. The church must actively offering to help and to work diligently to provide assistance for as long as it takes.
Adopt the Mindset: "Duty is Ours, Results Belong to God" When navigating conversations with angry or defensive people, it is helpful to remember the historical motto: "Duty is ours, results belong to God". Your responsibility is to faithfully proclaim the truth, rescue those being led to slaughter, and offer the hope of the Gospel. You cannot force someone to be empathetic or to change their mind. You can trust God with how the message is received.
My father went through this. My mother had a pregnancy in which parts of her body were failing. The doctors came out and told my father "you have 15 minutes to decide who lives". My father prayed and it was one of the few times he heard God's audible voice. God told him to trust him. So my father picked out my sister's name that day as Moriah, named after the mountain where Abraham sacrificed. Isaac. He told the doctors, to do their best to save both.
Both my mother and my sister lived, I am so glad that he did not choose one over the other.
While these stories represent incredibly tragic and heartbreaking situations, such extreme cases do not justify the intentional murder of an innocent human being.
**The argument claims that "pro-choice" is necessary so this woman didn't have to die.
- Healers, Not Killers: In situations where the life of the mother is in jeopardy, doctors are ethically obligated to act as healers to both patients, and there is "no circumstance where the baby must be intentionally murdered". The ethical response is to treat the mother's condition or deliver the child early.
- Early Delivery vs. Murder: In a life-threatening crisis, the child may need to be delivered early, which may result in a lower probability of survival, but "intentional murder must not be allowed as an option". A doctor can perform a surgery to save the mother without needing the "right" to intentionally dismember or poison the child first. However, "the fact that a child might have a shorter or more difficult life does not justify the right to murder them". Arguing that a child should be killed because of a physical or genetic abnormality is heartless.
2. The 10-Year-Old Girl (Rape & Grave Physical Danger) The scenario of a 10-year-old being pregnant involves a horrific, heinous crime of rape.
- Punish the Rapist, Not the Child: The perpetrator of this abuse has committed a crime that should face swift and severe justice, and the young victim requires immense support. However, "We should not murder a child for the sins of the father".
- Treating the Physical Danger: The opponent correctly points out that a 10-year-old's body is generally not equipped to safely carry and deliver a child, which poses a severe threat to her life. The exact same medical ethics from the cancer case apply here: if the pregnancy is threatening her life, doctors can intervene with life-saving procedures to separate the mother and child (such as an early C-section). The critical difference is the intent: the goal must be to save the mother's life through separation, not to intentionally murder the child.
3. The Argument for Bodily Autonomy The opponent concludes that "as a woman, it’s important to have autonomy."
- Not Her Body: The foundational flaw in the bodily autonomy argument is that the preborn child is a distinct human being; "the body inside a pregnant mother's body is not her body".
- Limits of Autonomy: While bodily autonomy is a recognized concept, it "is not an absolute license to use one's body in any way they choose". Specifically, you cannot use the concept of bodily freedom to justify intentionally killing an innocent human being.
4. The Appeal to Justice and Peace The opponent asks, "How can you ask for peace when injustice is prevalent against women?"
- True Justice is Equal Protection: You cannot fight the terrible injustice of sexual abuse or medical tragedy with the ultimate injustice of child sacrifice. Preborn children are image-bearers of God who "deserve the exact same legal protection afforded to everyone else".
- No Compromise: To allow exceptions for murder based on how a child was conceived or their physical health is a compromise on human value. True justice requires that we "never compromise on dehumanization" and demand "equal justice and protection for all human beings".
Address the "Hard Cases" with Compassion but Firmness You mentioned the difficulty of young pregnancies, low-income families, sick babies, or victims of rape. While we must have deep compassion and offer support, we cannot compromise on the value of life:
- Poverty and Hardship: Emphasize that while we absolutely must help the poor, taking a life is never the appropriate answer to poverty or suffering. Imagine if I was allowed to kill my 1 year old because I was poor. My father didn't always have food growing up, I'm so glad they didn't kill him
- Rape: It is a terrible, heinous crime and victims deserve immense support from their families and communities. However, it is fundamentally unjust to end the life of an innocent child for the sins of their father. You do not answer evil with more evil. A person is no less a person because of how they were born.
- Disability or Sickness: The argument that a child should be aborted because they might have a difficult or shorter life terrible; all humans bear God's image equally, and physical abnormalities do not justify murder.
- I have had 8 heart surgeries, I have costed my parents over 2 Million $, I am still human.
My advice is to Center Your Response on the Bible, Not Just Secular Arguments When you say your peace, ground your defense in Scripture. The Bible consistently affirms the humanity of the preborn, their inherent value, and the Christian duty to defend them. You can confidently stand on the fact that from the very beginning, the Bible views the preborn as fully human beings created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), granting them inherent dignity and the right to life.
God’s Intimate Creation in the Womb
- Psalm 139:13-15: "For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb... My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret." This passage highlights that God is the active creator of life long before birth.
- Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you." God treats the unborn as distinct, known individuals.
- Psalm 22:9-10 & Isaiah 44:2: Both of these passages speak of God forming us and bringing us forth from the womb, presenting the unborn not as "potential" life, but as actual human beings.
The Personhood and Innocence of the Preborn
- Luke 1:39-44: When Mary visits Elizabeth, the unborn John the Baptist leaps for joy at the presence of the unborn Jesus, whom Elizabeth already calls "my Lord". Furthermore, the Bible uses the exact same Greek word (brephos) to describe the unborn John in the womb as it does the newborn Jesus in the manger, proving there is no categorical distinction between born and unborn children.
- Romans 9:10-11: Paul speaks of Jacob and Esau "when they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad." This shows that children in the womb are morally significant individuals who are entirely innocent of personal guilt.
- Psalm 127:3: "Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward." Children are never described as burdens or accidents, but as blessings.
God’s Hatred for the Shedding of Innocent Blood
- Proverbs 6:17 & Psalm 106:37-38: Scripture explicitly lists "hands that shed innocent blood" as an abomination to the Lord, and fiercely condemns the ancient practice of child sacrifice. The unborn perfectly fit the category of innocent life, as they have committed no crime and cannot defend themselves.
- Amos 1:13: God pronounces severe judgment on the Ammonites because they "ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead," violence against the unborn invokes God's wrath.
The Biblical Mandate to Rescue the Vulnerable
- Proverbs 24:11: Believers are commanded to "rescue those being led to slaughter".
- Proverbs 31:8: We are instructed to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
- Exodus 21:22-25: This law provides strict legal protection for the unborn. If two men are fighting and strike a pregnant woman causing premature birth, any "harm" that comes to the child is punishable by the standard of "life for life," treating the preborn child's life with equal, objective value.
A Note on Misused Scripture Be aware that some people might try to use verses to argue for abortion, such as Genesis 2:7 (claiming life only begins at first breath) or Numbers 5 (claiming a test for adultery induces a miscarriage). I can
