Welcome to our study of the Book of Revelation. Few books in Scripture have generated more fascination, confusion, and debate, it is widely considered the most intimidating book in the entire Bible. Yet Revelation was not written to obscure God's truth but to reveal it. The very word revelation means "unveiling" or "revealing." God did not give this book to hide the truth from His people, but to reveal it. Given to encourage and strengthen believers, this book reminds us that Jesus Christ reigns over history and that His victory is certain, no matter how chaotic the world may appear. This is why is one of the only books in the Bible that promises a blessing to those who read, hear, and obey its words.
To understand Revelation, two keys are essential.
The most important key to understanding Revelation is the Old Testament. With over 500 references, John's visions are filled with symbols, images, and themes drawn directly from the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings to communicate God's message.
Second, Revelation is best understood through its structure. Like much Hebrew literature, it follows a chiastic pattern in which themes are arranged around a central focal point. Of which the entire Bible climax's into this final line,
10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
Revelation's central message and the real ending of the Bible as a whole is not fear—it is the victory of Christ and the assurance that He has already won.
